The problem
UNICEF's global programs needed milestone timelines and course openers that felt like one family, produced repeatedly without starting from zero each time.
Megha's role
Sole motion designer: storyboards, design language, AE build, renders.
The constraint
Every film had to survive translation — layouts that hold when copy doubles in length, and read without sound.
The outcome
A master After Effects toolkit — precomps, expressions, and type presets — that turns a new milestone brief into a finished film in days, not weeks.
One brief, many films
The ask was never a single video. UNICEF's global learning team publishes program milestones, annual arcs, and course openers continuously — each needed a timeline treatment that felt branded, calm, and unmistakably UNICEF.
So the real deliverable was a system: one After Effects project engineered so the next film reuses the last film's bones.

The bet
Design the toolkit first; every individual film becomes an instance of it.
A timeline is a story with dates
Each film starts as a narrative pass: what changed, why it mattered, what a viewer should feel at each milestone. Only after the story reads well as prose does it get cut into scenes.
Kinetic type carries the argument. The rule: one idea on screen at a time, and the type moves the way the idea feels — steady for facts, rising for progress, held still for weight.
Two columns before any pixels
Every film locks a two-column AV script — audio on one side, exactly what the viewer sees on the other. Voiceover is generated and timed first (Eleven Labs, cleaned in Audition), because in timeline films the animation obeys the narration, never the reverse.

Flat, warm, translation-proof
Milestone cards, iconography and type hierarchy were drawn in Illustrator against the worst case: French copy 40% longer than English, right-to-left mirroring, and projection on a low-contrast screen in daylight.
Everything ships on a grid — so when a regional team swaps copy, nothing breaks.

The After Effects build
The master project is a small machine. A date-driven null drives the whole timeline: milestones are precomps that slide along a motion path, and an expression maps 'year' to position so re-ordering a milestone is a one-value change.
Type animators handle the kinetic passages; easy-ease is never left at defaults — every move gets a hand-shaped curve in the graph editor so the film breathes instead of gliding.
Precomp architecture
Milestone cards, lower-thirds and transitions live as instanced precomps — fix once, fixed everywhere.
Expressions
wiggle() kept for texture only; the workhorses are linear() remaps tying position and opacity to the master time null.
Graph editor
Custom ease on every keyframe pair; the toolkit ships preset curves so future films inherit the same feel.
One slider drives the whole film
Assembly and sound
Rendered scenes meet narration and a music bed in Premiere Pro. Sound design stays sparse — a soft tick as each milestone lands, silence before the closing card.
Review rounds without drama
Client rounds ran on timecoded notes. Because the build is systematic, most notes — reorder, reword, retime — were value changes, not rebuilds. That is the point of the toolkit.
Regional team: opening feels slow for classroom use.
Tightened intro by ~3s; counter now starts on frame 1.
Copy grew after translation; cards clipped in French.
Card precomp rebuilt with auto-resizing text box — fixed across all films at once.
Approved. Toolkit requested for future program films.
Packaged .aep with preset curves, swatches, and a how-to page.
Delivery and the film
Masters render at 1080p with clean and subtitled versions; the .aep toolkit itself was delivered so the system outlives any single film.
Final film — link pending clearance
Final UNICEF films are pending clearance for public linking. This slot is reserved — Megha can drop the approved link in when it clears.
